Shuffle Randomness & Soundtrack to My Life!

People who know me, know that I like my Randomness. I can be random at random times. I like people who can come out with random things at random times.

Randomness is the spice of life!

So, back when CD players came out, I discovered the Randomiser on my CD player, and I loved to play with it. It didn’t work so well on a single album (I like hearing an album in order. I’m a bit weird like that), but if you had a multiple CD player (I had 3) then it would mix all the songs up and would almost feel like your own radio station.

So, how do you think I feel when I discover the wonder of MP’3 and iTunes. (Althought I used WinAMP originally). All of a sudden you have thousands of songs on tap and a little ‘Shuffle’ button. Wonderful πŸ™‚

Over the years I have found that the Shuffle on iTunes is cosmically linked to our brains. Not sure how those Apple techs did it (probably developed from the Apple IIe technology of the late 80’s), but somehow the right song can come on at exactly the right time. The song that you were desperate to hear suddenly clicks on and it just feels….RIGHT.

So, I will now incorporate the ‘Soundtrack to My Life’ meme which I have seen done by Skye and Aly.

I warn you now. I have 11,832 songs in iTunes, and there are some in there that I am NOT proud of, or were included for the sake of my kids (Wiggles, Hilary Duff, or inherited from others, Michael Buble). But, let’s see what happens!

If your life was a film what would the soundtrack be?

So, here’s how it works:
1. Open your library. (iTunes, Winamp, Media Player, iPod, etc)
2. Put it on shuffle.
3. Press play.
4. For every question, type the song that’s playing. (Title – Artist – Album)
5. When you go to a new question, press the next button. (or listen to the song in it’s entirety because you haven’t heard it for a while!)
6. Don’t lie and try to pretend you’re cool. (Damn)
7. When you’re finished, tag some other people to do it!

Opening Credits:
Balding Matters – Grinspoon – Guide to Better Living
Wow. It knows that I have chopped all my hair off. Freaky. See. COSMICALLY LINKED!

Waking Up:
Great Expectation – Living Colour – Collideoscope
Sounds suitable! It’s a new day after all. We have great expectation every day πŸ™‚

First Day of School:
Flowers – Danny Elfman – Batman Soundtrack
Nice. My soundtrack actually has soundtrack music in it. Very symetrical. And I love this soundtrack!

Falling in Love:
Believe – John Butler Trio – Three
Nice. I do.

Fight Song:
Message in a Bottle – John Butler Trio (cover version!!) – Like a Version (Triple J Compilation)
This is another thing I will bring up later. Repeated artists out of 11,832 songs. HOW?? Great song and great cover too. Chilled out fight song. I don’t like fighting.

Breaking Up:
I Want It All – Turbonegro – Scandinavian Leather
Well, I guess that’s an interesting Breaking Up Song, but hey, it sorta works. This is taking a while. I am listening to all the songs instead of hitting Next πŸ™‚

Prom (aka Yr 12 Formal?):
Comatose – Pearl Jam – Pearl Jam
I guess I am having a big night at my formal. Must be how I finish the night πŸ˜‰

Bedlam Bridge – Midnight Oil – Blue Sky Mining
Well that’s a deep song to represent my life. “But theres a main who makes no enemies, a body never breathless/No ambition ever hopeless”

Making Babies (Let’s just call this the SEX song):
Don’t Cry For Me Argentina – Madonna – Greatest Hits
What the? This is my Sex song? Interesting…..

Mental Breakdown:
Deadweight on Velveteen – Jose Gonzalez – Veneer
Well, I doubt my breakdown will be too serious with a song like this. Beautiful song. I think I’ll be ok…

No Pun Intended – The Hives – Tyrannosaurus Hives
Nice Driving song indeed. Fast, Driving, Exciting.

Destitute Illusions – Jamiroquai – Synkronized
Perfect for those tripping flashbacks to my life. I’ll take this. Funky song too….

Getting Back Together:
Born in the USA – Bruce Springsteen – Greatest Hits
Hmmmm….I wonder what this means. I get back together in the USA? Symbolic? Interesting….

Late – Kanye West – Late Registration
Well, it’s always best to be fashionably late for a wedding πŸ˜‰

Birth of Child:
Melt – Leftfield – Leftism
Well, why not. Babies can make you melt πŸ™‚

Final Battle:
Hide U – Kosheen – Chillout Session Volume 3
Well, I told you I am chilled out. Why the hell would I have a final battle in my life anyway? Am I fighting evil forces? Perfect!

Death Scene:
Breaking into Heaven – The Stone Roses – Second Coming
I did not rig this! Freaky stuff. Linked. To. Brain.

Funeral Song:
Breathing Through My Eyes – Skunkhour – Chin Chin
Why not hey? I want a funky funeral anyway. I WILL be providing a list of songs I want at my funeral. NO Jeff Buckley!!

End Credits:
Edge of the World – Faith No More – The Real Thing
I like it. A perfect way to end the movie. Damn. What a great soundtrack. I might have to release it.

So, that’s the other thing. I have put my iPod on shuffle many a time, and have had the same artist repeat 2 or 3 times. It freaks me out a little that it does that.

Is it totally random?

The answer is no. I have read articles about how the algorithm for how Apple makes the Shuffle work is a well-guarded secret. (See! Linked to your brrraaaiiinnn)

I think it has something to do with which songs you play a lot, which songs you have rated high or low. It’s all tied in together somehow….

That was fun. All the songs were pretty good. Except for maybe the ill-timed Madonna song, I am impressed!

Your turn …………
