I felt the Force. It was sorta squishy.

Yesterday I shot up to Sydney for a day trip with my eldest son who has a recent fascination with Star Wars.

I think that this is an awesome thing because the Star Wars movies were an obsession of mine when I was a kid and I still love them today.

The Powerhouse Museum has been showing a Star Wars exhibition for the last 6 months or so.

There’s a collection of models, costumes and kids activities on show and it was very entertaining! I wish there were things like this when I was younger.

I took quite a few snaps of the models and puppets used in the movie.

Did you know that Chewbacca was a runty wookiee?

Did you know that Wookiee is spelt with 2 e’s?

Did you that that they used real buildings in Tunisia for some of the Tatooine scenes?

Too bad the exhibition closes at the Powerhouse this weekend, but if you’ve heading to Melbourne, it’ll be there for 5 months from June!

It was nice to have a father/son day. Especially when we could talk about superheroes, aliens and cartoons all day!

There’s something wonderful about having a child grow up to share similar interests. Not that they’re not allowed to have their own interests of course, but I love that we can communicate about these things so well and it takes me back to my childhood.

Fortunately he also follows the Eels and Brumbies :)

(Kids x 3) + Sydney + Footy + 11 hours of driving = 1 Tired Dad

So after moving all of my stuff out of my place (more on that some time) and into various nooks and crannies on Friday, and getting a sore throat, stuffed up nose in the process, I took the kids up to Sydney on Friday arvo.

The original idea was to go to the Parramatta v Penrith game because the boys go for Parra and my daughter goes for Penrith. Also, I hadn’t been to a game in a while and thought it would be a good chance to get away on the weekend before the school holidays.

They wore me the hell out, but we had fun. They travel pretty well in the car, but it’s the dragging around Sydney that gets pretty hard.

We went on a ferry and a train (in the same day!) which was a first for them. They saw the sights of the harbour and hopefully it’ll be something they remember. LaLa got to experience managing 3 tired kids while being sick herself. Fun!

I must admit that I always forget and underestimate how much work it is to take the kids on a trip. With the excitement of being away, and the chance to take advantage of Dad, they can be a handful.

The 4 year old is constantly hungry, or sleepy, and I must have taken the boys to the toilet about 20 times. Bladders of a pregnant woman I tell you!

The footy on Sunday was fun. We had front row seats, which I thought would be good, but unfortunately the fence was so high that the kids struggled to see over it. Next time, a few rows back would work better :)

The result wasn’t the best, but I think the kids enjoyed it. The boisterous drunken outbursts from fans behind us will surely burn into their brain. Fortunately they weren’t witness to the racial abuse that apparently happened.

I thnk we ate way too much junk food, but hey…that’s what holidays are for hey?

I still wanna see Kung Fu Panda though. I was going to use the kids as an excuse to see it….but might have to see it myself now :)

So, back to work. Still got a scratchy throat and stuffed up nose, but instead get to share it with workmates. Yay for them :)

3 weeks till I head back to Sydney.

*sigh*

Time is going so slow.

Lest we Forget…

I nearly lost a child today.

But let me go backwards a little.

I have had the kids stay over this week for school holidays.

It’s been great, but I must admit I have been a little worn out by them. Also, I’m glad my ears are already ringing because the squeals are loud enough to smash glass.

We’ve watched movies, gone shopping, played interesting games of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles where I am Master Splinter (the rat).

Then, this morning we planned to see the balloons, which meant dragging my sorry, tired, butt out of bed at 6am and trying to decide whether or not to wake the kids and head out into the 8 degree morning (balmy for this time of year!).

The ear piercing alarm from my daughters alarm clock made my mind up for me as the kids launched out of bed and got dressed in many layers.

We scored a sweet park right next to the lawns of Old Parliament House and then went and checked them all out…

Mmm…the heat from the flame warms us up…

The eyes on this thing freaked me out a little…

This Kookaburra was the pick of the balloons this morning. I think there will be more on the weekend.

The obligatory reflection shot worked well…

He doesn’t even have to pose and he takes a good pic…

They were having a good time and then we decided to head off to the car and then grab some Macca’s for breakfast…

I walked my eldest son across the road, and then my 9 yr old daughter had my 4 yr old sons hand and were on the other side of the road. All of a sudden, he decides to pull out of her hand and run across the road. I noticed a car heading down the road from the left and I yelled out to him. I was about to run out to get him when a car screamed past from the right, in between me and my boy. I swear this car must have been going over 40kph and was within a metre of hitting both me and my son.

He ended up standing in the middle of the road as these 2 cars went around him.

it was crazy. it was so sudden and it scared the shit out of all of us. My daughter took it worst of all as she felt responsble for him, but it was not her fault at all. He just pulled out of her hand to run to  me.

The ride to Macca’s was a quiet one except for me stressing to the boy to be MUCH more careful when crossing and to always hold a hand. Stuff that he already knows.

Besides that, we went to the War Memorial this arvo and the kids had a great time in the Discovery Zone and looking at the dioramas.

After a long long day they hit the hay early. I think I need it too as I’m supposed to be going to work tomorrow.

Gah…why did I do that?

Big weekend coming up as well!

The Drop Bears have 2 gigs this weekend.

Friday night at the Holy Grail in Kingston and Saturday at the Tuggies Club (Vikings) in Erindale.

LaLa will also be in town which is great. I think we’ve opted out of hitting the balloons again this year though :)

Hope you have a good ANZAC Weekend.

And here’s hoping my son doesn’t forget how to cross a road…

It’s Life as I Know It

18 days into the year and I feel like I haven’t actually stopped yet.

I am going to take this self-imposed lunch break at work to give a status of my life.

That Report Card was something that I wanted to do as my first post of the year, and of course the obligatory Hottest 100 post.

But now…let’s stop and look.

Mick’s End of Year Report Card 2007

Well, the year that was Two Zero Zero Seven is complete.

It was an interesting year, full of surprises, good times, some bad times and some sad times.

It’s one of those years that could, in the history of my life, turn out to be pivotal.

To recap on how things were looking half way through the year, check out my Half Yearly Report Card.

But now it’s time to rate the year as a whole and see how things have progressed.

———————————————

Work:

Mick was showing potential half-way through this year towards increasing his work productivity and becoming a valued member of the team.He was responsible for resolving 100′s of incident in the initial stages of the project and was duly rewarded with a $100 Dinner Voucher. Whilst this reward was justified, I feel that his attitude towards work in the last couple of months has become quite negative and his late starts and long lunches seem to indicate this change in direction.

One incident resulted in the loss of service to 100′s of users after a sloppy mistake. This just shows that his mind is not always on the job and he needs to ensure he gets to bed before midnight.

I think that Mick is seeking a new challenge and perhaps the new year will bring new projects, challenges and a renewed enthusiasm towards his work. We can only hope, as I hear the dole queues are a pain.

B

Home:

This year has been a tough one for the nomadic Mick. The fact that he has stayed in 4 different locations during the year has lead to a feeling of a lack of permanency and no feeling of ‘home’.

This was fortunately rectified in July when a more permanent home was located and the fellow house-mates proved to be very cool. Sharing a place has been a positive experience for Mick, not withstanding the fact that 3 guys in one townhouse can make a good mess. He has enjoyed the fact that there are people to hang out with and that the kids are welcome at any time.

I look forward to Mick maintaining his residency for 2008 and cementing his home life a little more than 2007. I am positive he won’t piss off his house-mates too much.

Health:

Mick’s health has had an up and down year. It didn’t start well as indicated in the Half Yearly Report, but since July, his health has been remarkably excellent.

Turning 31 seems to have not hindered this young man who has pushed his body on boot camps, Indoor Soccer marathons and Indoor Cricket nights.

Ignoring the bumps and bruises that can occur through team sports, he has managed to keep himself in one piece.

The biggest area of concern has been his in-grown toenail that continues to plague him. After fighting off the affliction in July, it re-occurred in November and remains to this day. Seriously, people are sick of seeing the red, swollen and pusy toe that you seem insistent on showing off and picking at whilst at dinner tables.

Take the anti-biotics, fill the repeat and get rid of the pain, is my suggestion.

Not that you seem to listen to anyone, least of all your girlfriend that continues to remind you.

Rolled ankles have been an area of concern in the past, so it would be useful if Mick attempted to not wear thongs too much as they have a tendency to weaken the ankles. His new found love of thongs (aka Havianas) may have caused him to roll his ankle recently which he then proceeds to bitch complain about at length.

A forthcoming appointment with the Dermatologist is a welcome move as the plethora of moles on his body are an area of concern. Hopefully there are no suspect spots.

I notice that Mick has steadfastly refused to go to the dentist. I’m afraid that his mark has been adjusted to reflect this flagrant dis-regard for his dental health. His stubbornness is honestly getting quite annoying. I have reached the point of caring less about whether his teeth fall out of his head or not.

I believe that Mick has only missed a couple of days of work due to ‘real’ illness and this is commendable. Perhaps if he could show the same commitment to work that he does to sport and music, he would be commended further.

B

Love:

Mick has managed to maintain and improve on his mark from the first half of the year.

Despite the long distance relationship and the times of doubt and sadness, he has managed to build a solid relationship with LaLa and I forsee it being a successful and long lasting connection.

He needs to work on his ‘schmoopiness’ levels that have a tendency to increase when alone and bored. Just because she is not with you does not mean you need to get all mopey. Enjoy the times you have with her and look forward to talking and chatting to her when you can.

The recent holiday away with LaLa has done wonders for their relationship and being together for 2 weeks has proved that neither is about to run off screaming at the fact that the other person annoys the crap out of them. In fact it seems the times of long distance can make a relationship stronger in the end.

Efforts are to be encouraged around making sure that Family, Friends, Band and Life commitments balance successfully and that LaLa gets the attention that she deserves.

Extra-Curricular Activities :

This new category has been added for the 2nd half of the year as it appears that Mick has had a very busy 2nd half of the year.

One of the bigger events in the last 6 months has been the band that Mick has joined. The Drop Bears have been taking up a lot of time for Mick, but it has been something that he has been hoping to do for a long time. The weekly rehearsals and frequent gigs have not only given Mick an excellent outlet for his creativeness but also contributed much needed funds to his wallet. The friendship between band members may also prove to be a positive influence over the coming months.

Live music is also something that Mick continues to maintain a presence at. The forthcoming Big Day Out and Foo Fighters concerts look to be keeping the entertainment levels at a commendable level.

Mick has also been quite involved in playing team sports at the Cricket Centre, as well as many drinking sessions at trivia nights. These activities, whilst commendable for his commitment should probably include less alcoholic consumption. I would encourage more watching of Liverpool matches and Eels games with his son.

B+

Family:

Unfortunately with all the extra-curricular activities that Mick insists on doing, his time with family has not been up to a satisfactory level. Mick needs to work on making sure that time with his kids is not jeopardised by his other interests.

Having said that, the time he spends with the kids has been enjoyable and the kids have taken advantage of living close by staying over on many nights, going out to dinner and spending time playing with their Dad.

Mick should remember to make sure that the boys interest in Rugby League, Cricket and Holdens is kept at a reasonable level.

B

Overall:

2007 was a tumultuous year for Mick, but as usual he appears to have come out the other side being stronger, more confident and a little balder.

2008 can only hold bigger and better things including more time with his family, lover and band.

The 2 pivotal things this year were the new love of LaLa and the re-introduction of music into his life. Both of these things could prove to mould the coming years of Mick’s’ life.

I think it will be another year or two before Mick will be able to move forward to the next stage of his life that will ultimately make him happy, but he is bridging that gap confidently as the days go by.

Mick needs to avoid his feelings of insecurity and doubt by grasping the moments that he has in life and enjoying what he has instead of lamenting what he doesn’t.

Resolutions for 2008:

  • Ride to work 3 times a week
  • Make my lunch 3 times a week
  • Avoid schmoopiness
  • Go to bed earlier and use the laptop less before bed
  • Make the most of weekends with the kids
  • Start a photo blog and pursue more photography
  • See lots of live bands
  • Save money for a potential OS trip in 2009
  • Read books

Blog-meet Bust.

Well, Friday night was a bust!

I couldn’t make it till late, but by 8.15 I had a message from Aurelius saying not to bother turning up!

It seems that there were late cancellations and some people who did turn up late, but overall it just seems that it was the wrong night.

I think we’ll have to wait till it’s a bit warmer, and maybe shoot for something like a Saturday arvo or something, so we can meet up before any night commitments.

Maybe 3 weeks notice would work better as well. I must admit I didn’t even realise it was on until a few days before….

Well, Happy Fathers Day to all the Dads out there!

I had my kids over last night and they surrounded me with presents this morning. It was great! No breakfast in bed for me though. I had to get THEM all breakfast.

Oh well…maybe in a few years :P

The best Fathers Day present for me would be for the Eels to beat the Broncos this arvo! I will be taking the boys down to the club with me to watch it before an evening with my Dad.

Because the sorry wooden spooning Panthers (Sorry Aly) lost to the Warriors last night, the Eels can’t get a home semi-final next week, but a win would guarantee we play the Warriors next week, instead of the Sea-Eagles, Cowboys or Storm. Whoever we play, it’ll be a tough game, but the Eels have a good record against the Warriors in NZ.

Anyway, off to soak up the sun on this sunny Sunday with my 3 yr old.

My Family, Simpsonised.

I am counting the days down till the Simpsons movie opens… (14!) and just to get us in the mood, I have decided to introduce my family, in Simpsons characters :)

To start with, there’s the first born. A cutie in any colour.

First Born

Second is the terror. The Middle Child. Syndrome and all.

Second Born

Then there’s the baby. The lil’ one. The BRAT!

Third Born

What an adorable litter! Luckily they all love the Simpsons too :)

Then of course, there is the Daddy. Me. Daddy Cool…so to speak..

Mick

Oh yes…that’s me. Bright green clothing and all :)

But we don’t stop there!

Then there’s my eldest sis,

Simpsons Mel

Couldn’t save that one like the other for some reason!

And there’s the lil’ sis

Simpsons Katie

Yes. She does wear that lime green top every. single. day. Washed it lately Katie?

Then there’s the Dud.

Simpsons Dad

He might not like me for that one. His gut isn’t really that big, but hey…he has to look like Homer.

And there’s Mumsy.

Simpsons Mum

There we go. That’s the family. Simpsonised for your viewing pleasure :)

Go and do it yourself…here

I was such a wimp…

…back at school. I couldn’t handle it when other kids at school gave me shit or picked on me.

I also disliked maths a lot. Wednesday was maths day….

Tuesday Night….

*COUGH COUGH*…

*COUGH COUGH*

“Ohhh..my throat hurts.”

“Not feeling very well sweetie?”

“Ugh..not really. Can I have some icecream to make my throat feel better?”

“Sure. It’ll soothe it…”

“I think so too. Nice..and cool…and sweet..and SOOTHING..”

One big bowl of ice cream later.

“You should go to bed Michael, so you feel better in the morning..”

“Ok…”

Throughout the night…

*COUGH COUGH*

*COUGH COUGH*

Wednesday Morning…time to get ready for school…

*COUGH COUGH….COUGH!*

“Oh dear, you still don’t sound very well…I heard you coughing during the night.”

“Yeah….it’s just really tickly and sore..”

“Maybe I shuld take you to the doctor..”

“No..No…it’s not that bad..”

“Want to stay home today? I’m going shopping..”

“Ummm….ok…..sure….yeah…i think it’s best.”

Shopping…Maccas…all by myself…for the whole day…and..

NO MATHS!

Thanks Mum. You knew I was never really sick, but you enjoyed the company as well.

They were memorable days. Especially eating chicken in the Maccas above the ice skating rink at Macquarie Shopping Centre or watching Days of Our Lives on the couch.

Have a great day Mum :)
